World Cancer Day 2026 and DIOPTRA – Why is prevention key to addressing cancer in Europe?

What did the World Cancer Day webinar reveal about cancer prevention in the EU?

On World Cancer Day 2026, the European Health Policy Platform hosted a live webinar to mark the launch of the 5th edition of the European Code Against Cancer (ECAC5), now available in all EU languages. The webinar highlighted a central question: how can prevention be better embedded in Europe’s response to cancer?

The ECAC5 brings together 14 evidence-based recommendations addressing personal behaviours, environmental exposures, and medical interventions for the general population across the European Union. While the Code focuses on cancer prevention, many of its recommendations also support the prevention of other non-communicable diseases, contributing to healthier lives and improved well-being overall. Together, they offer clear, accessible guidance to reduce cancer risk, counter common misconceptions, and ensure that reliable cancer prevention information is available to everyone, regardless of language or location.

Speakers also explored the EU Parliament’s role in shaping cancer policy (including a mention of legislations, budget, and accountability), alongside scientific perspectives from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and the advocacy work of the Association of European Cancers Leagues (ECL). The session reinforced prevention as a shared responsibility, spanning institutions, researchers, civil society, and citizens, and concluded with an open Q&A, reflecting strong public interest in preventive approaches.

World Cancer Day: a deeply embedded history of prevention

World Cancer Day was established on 4 February 2000 by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), the world’s largest and longest-standing international cancer organisation, based in Geneva. Its founding document, the Paris Charter, set out a clear commitment to advancing research, improving patient services, and strengthening prevention.

The current 2025–2027 World Cancer Day theme, “United by Unique”, places people and their lived experiences at the centre of cancer care. Why does this matter? Because cancer is not only a biological disease. Mental health, social and economic conditions, geography, stigma, and access to care all profoundly shape outcomes. The campaign highlights the need to move beyond a purely scientific or clinical lens and towards people-centered, equitable, and inclusive policies.

This year’s campaign aims to transform the voices of individuals and communities into concrete advocacy tools for policymakers and regulators, supporting a more holistic approach to cancer control. Its reach so far has been significant: over 900 activities in 102 countries, with engagement from key opinion leaders and public figures. Across Europe, initiatives ranged from policy-focused conferences such as those led by the Hellenic Cancer Federation (ELLOK) to outreach campaigns by cancer leagues in Switzerland, Portugal, and Hungary.

How does DIOPTRA contribute to prevention and early cancer risk reduction?

Despite progress, challenges remain. According to the latest European Commission Country Cancer Profiles report, cancer survival rates are improving across the EU, yet substantial disparities persist between Member States. These differences underline a critical question: how can prevention reach everyone, earlier and more effectively?

Against this backdrop, the DIOPTRA project has placed prevention at the centre of its work. For World Cancer Day and Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, DIOPTRA is focusing on empowering the general population through knowledge and early action, under the message: “Knowledge is power. Screening is prevention.”

DIOPTRA’s approach reflects a forward-looking vision of cancer prevention, one that integrates science, data, and citizen engagement to support earlier risk identification and informed decision-making. By contributing to the broader European prevention agenda, including actions such as participation in key industry events across countries, DIOPTRA aims to support healthier populations and reduce inequalities in cancer outcomes across Europe.

Stay tuned as we share further updates, insights, and resources on cancer prevention in the months ahead.
